Unit I

Introduction and the importance for intellectual property right (IPR) – Different types of Intellectual Property Rights: Patent, Copyright, Trade Mark, industrial Design, Geographical Indication, and Layout Design – Genetic Resources and Traditional Knowledge – Trade Secret – IPR in India : Genesis and development – IPR in abroad – Major International Instruments concerning Intellectual Property Rights: Paris Convention, 1883, the Berne Convention, 1886, the Universal Copyright Convention, 1952, the WIPO Convention, 1967,the Patent Co-operation Treaty, 1970, the TRIPS Agreement, 1994

Unit II

Patents – Elements of Patentability: Novelty, Non-Obviousness, Industrial Application – Types of Patents -Non-Patentable Subject Matter – Patent Registration Procedure, Rights and Duties of Patentee, Assignment and licensing of Patent, Restoration of lapsed Patents, Surrender and Revocation of Patents, Infringement of Patent, Remedies & Penalties – Patent office and Appellate Board.

Unit III

Definition and scope of Copyright -Indian Copyright and its Perspective- Subject matter of copyright: original literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works; cinematograph films and sound recordings – Registration Procedure, Term of protection, Ownership of copyright, Assignment and licence of copyright – Infringement, Remedies for infringement – Limitation of Copyright

Unit IV

Concept of Trademarks – Different types of trademarks- Purpose and Functions of Trademark – Non-Registrable Trademarks – Registration of Trademarks – Rights of holder and assignment and licensing of marks – Infringement, Remedies & Penalties – Trademarks registry and appellate board

Unit V

India`s New National IP Policy, 2016 – Govt. of India step towards promoting IPR – Govt. Schemes in IPR – Career Opportunities in IP – IPR in current scenario.
