Unit I

Introduction to Illustration Techniques

Overview of fundamental illustration techniques: line, shape, form, and texture- Introduction to traditional illustration tools and materials

Activities: Drawing exercises, exploring different illustration styles

Unit II

Principles of Packaging Design

Understanding the role of packaging in branding and marketing- Analysis of packaging structures, materials, and formats

Activities: Case studies of effective packaging designs, packaging analysis assignments

Unit III

Composition and Layout Design

Principles of composition, balance, and hierarchy in packaging layout- Typography basics and its application in packaging design

Activities: Creating mood boards, experimenting with layout compositions

Unit IV

Digital Illustration for Packaging

Introduction to digital illustration tools and software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator)- Techniques for digital rendering, coloring, and texturing

Activities: Digital illustration exercises, creating digital sketches for packaging concepts

Unit V

Packaging Projects and Portfolio Development

Applying illustration and packaging design skills to real-world projects- Developing packaging concepts for different products and target audiences

Portfolio development and presentation techniques

Activities: Designing packaging prototypes, presenting final packaging projects

Objectives and Outcomes

Objective:

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of illustration techniques and their application in packaging design. Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on projects, students will learn the principles of illustration, composition, and visual storytelling, with a focus on packaging applications. Emphasis will be placed on developing skills in traditional and digital illustration methods, as well as understanding the role of packaging in branding and consumer engagement.

Course Outcome (CO):

CO1– Demonstrate proficiency in fundamental illustration techniques, including line drawing, shading, and color theory.

CO2- Understand the principles of composition, layout, and typography in packaging design.

CO3- Apply illustration skills to create effective packaging designs that communicate brand identity and product attributes.

CO4- Analyse and critically evaluate and iterate on packaging designs based on feedback and usability testing.

CO5- Utilize digital illustration tools and software to enhance and refine packaging designs.

CO6- Develop original concepts and visual narratives for packaging projects that resonate with target audiences.
