Syllabus

Unit I

Introduction to Calligraphy

Overview of calligraphy and its applications- Introduction to calligraphy tools and materials Basic strokes and letterforms – Activities: Practicing basic strokes, exploring different writing instruments

Unit II

Foundational Styles

Study of foundational calligraphic styles: Italic, Carolingian, and Uncial- Practice exercises to develop consistency and control- Exploration of historical manuscripts and exemplars

Activities: Copying historical scripts, creating practice sheets.

Unit III

Decorative Styles

Introduction to decorative calligraphic styles: Gothic, Copperplate, and Spencerian- Techniques for embellishing letterforms and adding flourishes- Application of decorative styles in contemporary design Activities: Creating decorative alphabets, experimenting with flourishes.

Unit IV

Contemporary Applications

Application of calligraphy and lettering in graphic design and visual communication- Design principles for integrating calligraphy with typography and layout- Creating original artworks and design projects using calligraphic techniques Activities: Designing logos, posters, and greeting cards, mock client projects

Unit V

Personal Projects and Portfolio Development

Self-directed projects to explore individual interests and styles- Portfolio development and presentation techniques- Reflection on personal growth and learning throughout the course

Activities: Developing a personal calligraphy project, preparing portfolio materials

Objectives and Outcomes

Objective:

This course offers students the opportunity to explore the art of calligraphy and lettering. Through hands- on exercises, demonstrations, and projects, students will learn various calligraphic styles and lettering techniques, with a focus on developing skill and artistic expression. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the historical and cultural significance of calligraphy, as well as its contemporary applications in design and visual communication.

Course Outcome (CO):

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

CO1- Identify various tools and materials used in calligraphy and lettering.

CO2- Understand the historical development of calligraphy and its cultural significance.

CO3- Apply calligraphic principles to create aesthetically pleasing letterforms and compositions.

CO4– Demonstrate proficiency in foundational calligraphic techniques and lettering styles.

CO5- Incorporate the role of calligraphy and lettering in contemporary design and visual culture.

CO6- Create original calligraphic artworks and designs for personal and professional projects.
