Stem cells and Regenerative Biology Lab

About

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Among the primary pathologies contributing to these diseases are fibrosis and calcification of cardiac tissue, both of which can culminate in heart failure. Currently, there are no effective therapies available to directly address or reverse these conditions. Our primary research focus in the Stem Cells and Regenerative Biology Laboratory is dedicated to exploring innovative solutions to these challenges.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity globally. So understanding, managing, and preventing CVDs is a primary unmet medical need. We are working at the interface of interdisciplinary domains, stem cell biology, immunology, and bioengineering to produce novel therapeutic strategies against CVDs.

Stem cells and Regenerative Biology Lab

Cardiovascular diseases are the number one killer disease worldwide. Fibrosis and calcification are the two significant pathologies observed in the heart, which may eventually lead to heart failure.  Currently, no therapies exist to treat fibrosis and calcification. Our primary research focus in stem cells and regenerative biology lab is,

Regeneration of Human Heart Tissue

The unmet clinical need for better regeneration and reduced pathological fibrosis drives our research. We are investigating how to augment regeneration and reduce pathological fibrosis in the heart after an injury.

Novel Therapeutic Options against Soft Tissue Calcification

Calcification is a significant injury response in soft tissues such as the cardiovascular system. Currently, no treatments are available to reverse calcification. We are interrogating ways to develop new therapies against soft tissue calcification.

We utilize the potential of induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSCs), CRISPR technology, and injury models to study these cardiac diseases in a dish. Using transcriptomics, proteomics, and imaging technology, we aim to understand these diseases and develop transformative therapies against cardiovascular diseases that significantly advance cardiovascular medicine.
