Amrita RITE

Rural India Technology – based Education

About

The Rural India Tablet Education (AmritaRITE) program aligns with United Nations SDGs 3, 4, and 5. Technology-aided education through village afterschool centers has been developed as a model to make quality education accessible to children and adults in the remotest of rural villages and tribal communities of India. Studies have revealed that of all students in India enrolled in Standard V, half cannot read a Standard II textbook and 40% of Standard III students cannot recognize numbers up to 100. Keeping this in mind, AmritaRITE Centers start with elementary level assessments of all enrolled children, identify their actual knowledge levels and start tutoring them from that level. The tablet is an effective tool that bridges the gap in learning easily and painlessly.

Peer Mentorship for Awareness

This school-based extension program born out of Amma’s vision to keep children from losing their way by teaching them about the evils of substance abuse, human trafficking and mobile and internet misuse. Today, the program also uses the medium of ‘Ambassadors’ to educate children and adolescents on gender equality and adolescent health through street plays, activities and presentations. The program has more than 7000 direct beneficiaries and has trained more than 125 rural teen ambassadors.

Education Technology

Rural India has very limited exposure to technology in education. Only 8% of primary schools in rural areas have access to computers. Low to zero internet connectivity and lack of consistent electricity are major challenges. Additionally, the available technology content is not suited to the rural cultural context, language and lifestyle, making it difficult for children to associate with it in their everyday life.

The program was specifically designed keeping in mind key challenges faced in the education sector. Some of the interventions designed to support rural education afterschool centers, digital literacy & computer awareness, progress-monitoring, collaborations with schools, scholarships, and school supplies. Moreover, the award winning technology developed by AmritaCREATE is adapted for rural India. AmritaRITE bridges the digital divide employing devices and content that are:

  • Low cost
  • Multilingual and culturally appropriate
  • Monitors progress and attendance
  • Works in poor connection and inconsistent electricity
