Earthquake damages buildings. In addition to life loss, damage to buildings leads to disruption of functionality of the building. Such disruption has a knock-on effect on several sectors leading to a substantial reduction in the Gross Domestic Product. Recently, the economic loss associated with earthquakes has been on the rise. Considering this, there is an urgent need to develop systems that minimise economic loss with a marginal increase in the initial cost of the building. Such systems should be able to sustain damage during an earthquake and be readily replaceable to ensure continued functionality. Through this research, there is an opportunity to minimise loss to people’s livelihood after a significant earthquake.
