Sustainable Building Technique for Affordable Rural Construction: Rammed Earth

Research is ongoing to see how traditional techniques can be used along with other locally available materials to propose sustainable alternatives. Amrita University Coimbatore campus students are working on rammed earth construction. Their work consists in applying engineering techniques into age-old traditional methods and including plastic waste in the construction mix to improve the durability and solidity. As part of this project, the student conducted field work in Jharkhand to understand the requirements and did extensive testing of the soil to choose the right proportions. Based on that a prototype house was built in campus using Rammed Earth technique.
