Flood Evac (Vulnerability of Transportation Structures, Warning and Evacuation in Case of Major Inland Flooding)

Project Incharge:Dr. Maneesha Vinodini Ramesh
Flood Evac (Vulnerability of Transportation Structures, Warning and Evacuation in Case of Major Inland Flooding)

Urban flooding has become a common phenomenon worldwide in recent times. This is due to a combination of many factors such as unplanned growth in urban and suburban areas, improper maintenance of drainage and sewage facilities, indiscriminate conversion of many water bodies into building areas, unseasonal rainfall due to global warming, etc. As a part of this Indo-German joint research initiative on urban flooding code named, FloodEvac, Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications (AmritaWNA) at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in India has launched a project for monitoring and management of urban flooding using crowd-sourcing.

This trend has been observed during the recent floods in Chennai, India and also in Philippines and China. Smart phones equipped with high speed data connectivity and high resolution cameras are ubiquitous these days especially among the urban community. Therefore, we plan to involve the local community in data gathering about the local flood situation and the relief and rescue needs and offerings in their neighborhood. This data can also be used to assess the effectiveness of the action taken in the past and to assess the future planning needs.

This project addresses inherent challenges of urban floods. The proposed software suite (Smartphone & web) aims at –

  1. Collaboration between Government agencies, NGOs, Volunteers etc.
  2. Sharing real time information on the status of flooding, rescue and relief requests and responses, etc.
  3. Collecting data from various smart phone sensors in the background.
  4. Analyzing and synthesizing data to track the location and movement of people during a flooding event.
  5. Assessing the integrity of structures such as bridges.
  6. Using data collected for future city planning  and improving drainage systems and other infrastructure.
