Onam Celebrations 2019

‘Sarkaravaratti Naalukal’ – Onam Celebrations at School of Ayurveda

The Onam celebrations, ‘Sarkaravaratti Naalukal’ of Amrita School of Ayurveda, were held from September 30-October 1, 2019, amidst great cheer and the cultural extravaganza witnessed mass participation. The event was attended by all the batches in the School of Ayurveda, as well as all the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college. ‘Sarkaravaratti Naalukal’ was on an altogether grander scale than ever. 

At Amrita School of Ayurveda, preparations started a whole day ahead on the morning of September 29^th. Students, as well as non-teaching staff, got together and started making a variety of traditional decorations using kuruthola and hanging them along the corridors and entrances, decorating the main auditorium, doing arrangements for different outdoor games.  

The celebrations commenced with outdoor games on September 30^th. The enthusiasm of students, teachers and non-teaching staff made outdoor games like Vadamvali, Chakilottam, Uriyadi and pillow fight interesting and memorable. The main attraction of ‘Sarkaravaratti Naalukal’ was revealed by 3 pm when the extraordinary artists from Bhadra Mudiyettu Sangham began performing Kalamezhuthum Paatum at the Bhajan hall. Later, the celebration extravaganza reached its height when the Mudiyettu team conquered the Amriteswari Hall for nearly 4 1/2 hours. The mesmerizing performance by the whole team, demonstrating the story of Dharika Vadam, in its traditional way, and also incorporating the modern elements, turned out to be an unforgettable experience and was a true feast to the senses. 

Additionally, the preparations for the Pookalam competition went on throughout the night with the student community getting together and drawing a pattern for Pookalam and also removing the petals from the kilos of colorful flowers all to be used the next day. The Pookalam competition was from 6 am to 9 am. On the day, young ladies looking gorgeous in their traditional sarees and young men looking handsome in their colorful dhoties, participated in “Varavelppu”- a small procession with Maveli. Perhaps the highlight of the day was Melam by the students which accompanied the Maveli the whole way. 

The function on the second day began by an Onam message by Maveli (a fresher) and lighting the lamp by our vice-principal, Dr. R. N. Tripathy. The day witnessed many programs and the most exciting was definitely the Thiruvathira kali by the students and the faculty members. Apart from that, there was Onapaatu from different UG and PG students batches, a few thrilling games like sundari neeyim sundaran njanum. Out of which vellamkudi matsaram stood out on account of incredible participation from students. The most awaited event of ‘Sarkaravaratti Naalukal’ was “Manam pole Mangalyam”, the innovative effort to bring out the best Dr. couples on the campus. The huge support and participation by the teachers were commendable in all ways. The performance by the RUBBER BAND of Amrita School of Ayurveda also turned out to be thoroughly entertaining. The marvelous dance by the house surgeons and students as well added colour to the charm of ‘Sarkaravaratti Naalukal’. The on-stage programs ended with musical chair competition. At dusk, the young ladies were all set to perform Thiruvathira kali in the serene ambience of chirathu and kuruthola. The 2-day celebrations came to its end with a delicious serving of Kappa.

Onam Celebrations

Onam, the traditional festival of Kerala is celebrated by the students before the start of Onam vacation. The traditional Pulikali, Chenda melam and various folk and modern art forms are the special features.

Onam celebrations were carried out with full festivity in the campus for two days from 27^th & 28^th, August.

Day one the program commenced with various outdoor games for students. Along with students faculties also participated with full energy in various games to keep the spirit of Onam alive. Evening programs began with Thiruvathirakkali in a natural environment outside the building in the ambience of oil lamps. It is a traditional form of indigenous dance of Kerala which has a lot of relevance during Onam festival. Many teams representing various batches presented their talents competing for best performance. The outgoing interns presented with a 30 member team which performed the dance. It was a treat for the eyes and mind. Later on it was followed with a traditional dinner where tapioca was served as the main dish. Tasty tapiocas were once the staple food of ancient Malayalees. Students gathered after the dinner to do the pre preparations for the major competition Athapookalam. Based on the set rules already published by the program committee they did the outline and basic works with full enthusiasm before going back to bed that night.

The next morning was completely occupied right from 5.30 am to complete the wonderful Athapookalams. After the Pookalam by 9.30 am a traditional procession was carried out by students representing the coming back of old king Mahabali accompanied with Chenda melam (traditional orchestra) later the procession ended up at Amriteshwari hall commencing the official function of Onam celebrations presided over by Dr. C. Nagarajan (Swami Sankaramritananda Puri), Medical Director, Amrita School of Ayurveda. It was followed by performances of various classical art forms by the teachers and students along with funny competitions associated with Onam celebrations.

Prize distribution to the winners of the competitions conducted in regard with Onam celebrations was also carried out. The program was followed with a delicious traditional lunch that had more than 15 varieties of dishes served in plantain leaves (ona sadya). Afternoon also witnessed various competitions and programmes that ended with Onam holidays. It was a great and memorable event in every ones mind who participated.

Amrita Kalolsavam

A two day arts-and-culture event on the campus is conducted by the students to exploit their inherent special talents. Competitions are held house-wise: Amritamayi, Anandamayi, Chinmayi and Jyothirmayi. Facilitated by the staff, students themselves are trained to organize the various events a part of their life at Amrita.

Amma’s Birthday Celebrations

Amma’s birthday finds an international gathering of Her devotees at Amritapuri in the month of September. Students are encouraged to participate in the service activities initiated by the Math during this time. Three days in September are marked as service days for the students of the campus.

One day in the even semester is devoted for competitions in sports where students get the opportunity to exhibit their talents in athletics and games. The facilities provided by the campus help create a healthy spirit of competitiveness in these events.

‘Bhoomikkoru Oushadhakkuda’ Program

‘Bhoomikkoru oushadhakkuda’, a public event to promote the conservation and cultivation of medicinal plants, was organized by the Department of Dravyaguna, School of Ayurveda, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri campus, in co-ordination with the Kulasekharapuram Agricultural office on December 27, 2018.

Hon. MLA Shri. R. Ramachandran, Panchayat President Smt. Sreelekha Krishna Kumar, Agricultural Officer Shri. Bineesh V. R. and Ward Member Shri. Subash were present on the occasion. The welcome address was given by Dr. C. Nagarajan (Swami Sankaramritananda Puri) (Medical Director, Amrita School of Ayurveda) which was followed by a speech by Dr. M. R. Vasudevan Nampoothiri, Principal, Amrita School of Ayurveda. The function was inaugurated by the Hon. MLA and Dr. Priya S. (HOD, Department of Dravyaguna) together by handing over an Aloe Vera sapling to the Ward member Shri. Subash.

During the event, Dr. P. Ram Manohar (Research Director, ACARA), the Panchayat president and Ward member were felicitated. After the event, 400 Aloe Vera saplings were distributed to the 1st ward of Kulasekharapuram panchayat by the PG and UG students. Along with the saplings, brochures containing the properties and the uses of the plant were also distributed.

The 2013 batch students helped a cancer patient by donating Rs 10,000 to Mrs. Venugopal, Kollam for treatment of her husband, who is suffering from cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy.
