Bio

Dr. Akhil Sivan currently serves as an Assistant Professor (Sr. Gr.) in the Department of Chemistry, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus. He completed his Master’s degree in Advanced Organic Chemistry from the University of Kerala in 2008. He completed his Ph. D. from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in 2018 in the broad subject area of “Synthetic Organic Chemistry,” where special emphasis has been given to the synthesis of heterocycles and spirocycles and the construction of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds using Cerium(IV) Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) as a single electron transfer oxidant. His research interests include heterocyclic synthesis, solid-supported and heterogeneous catalyst-mediated organic synthesis, lanthanide and transition metal-catalysed radical chemistry, and organic base-catalysed synthesis.

    Thesis Title: “New Synthetic Methods for Multi-Substituted Furans, Vicinal Triketones and Benzylidene Fluorene Derivatives Using Cerium(IV) Ammonium Nitrate”
    Highlights:

    • Developed a new method for the preparation of tetrasubstituted and fused furans by the oxidative addition of terminal acetylenes to 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds in the presence of CAN.
    • A mild protocol for the synthesis of VTCs from β-dicarbonyl compounds has been achieved by using catalytic amounts of CAN.
    • A mild and improved method for the synthesis of spirodihydrofuran fluorenes and dinitrato adducts of benzylidene and diphenyl methylidenefluorene has been discovered using solid phase CAN reaction.
    • Carried out the dinitration of benzylidene and diphenyl methylidenefluorene using CAN supported on silica.
