Abstract : Due to the change in power generation technologies, power system models has changed from vertical utility structure to an open market structure where consumers are assured of good quality power at competitive prices. Major problem associated with this deregulated structure is network congestion. Congestion management is a mechanism to prioritize the transactions and reduce overload in the transmission lines. Different congestion management schemes has been introduced like nodal pricing, zonal pricing, generator rescheduling, price area congestion management, etc. Price area congestion management can be directly applied in case of a radial network where there is no loop flows. In this paper application of price area congestion management for an interconnected system with loop flows with the help of dc power flow calculations is discussed. A control algorithm is developed and is applied for a three area interconnected system to achieve this. The algorithm is tested on the three area system to relieve congestion. Application of price area concept along with dc power flow calculations make the process simple and can be applied for any interconnected network with n number of buses.
