Abstract : In this paper, an attempt has been made to enhance the macrostructure characteristics such as deposition rate, weld thickness, penetration area, and hardness by using a flat wire electrode and by optimizing the welding parameters. For this, an experimental study has been made. The welding parameters such as the welding current I, welding speed WS, and the orientation of a flat wire electrode θ that influence most the weld bead performance are considered, and the other parameters are held constant. The welding was carried out by using the L9 Taguchi technique. The performances of the weld samples are analyzed, and the macrostructure characteristics are measured. The signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are applied to study the effect of welding parameters. The results obtained by using the S/N ratio match closely with ANOVA. It is inferred that the orientation of the flat wire electrode and welding current are most influencing parameters. Multiple regression equations are also formulated for verifying the macrostructure characteristics.
