Jan Aushadhi Diwas Observed at Amrita School of Pharmacy

Jan Aushadhi Diwas was observed at Amrita School of Pharmacy on March 5, 2025. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Ajith Kumar Thacholi Kommath, CEO of Deepak Distributors, the All Kerala Distributors for Jan Aushadhi.

Drawing from his extensive experience in pharmaceutical distribution and supply chain management, Mr. Ajith Kumar shared valuable insights into the concept, objectives, and implementation strategies behind the Jan Aushadhi movement.

During his talk, Mr. Ajith Kumar provided a step-by-step guide on how to start a Jan Aushadhi Kendra, highlighting the eligibility criteria, application process, and operational requirements. He emphasized the government’s support system, including subsidies, initial stock supply, and training provided to ensure smooth operations of these stores. Mr. Ajith also encouraged the students to pursue entrepreneurship in the pharmaceutical sector and incorporate innovative ideas, such as educating customers on the proper use of medications.

He also spoke in detail about the significant price difference between branded medicines and generic medicines available through Jan Aushadhi Kendras, reinforcing how this cost reduction directly benefits patients, especially those from economically weaker sections.

Mr. Ajith Kumar further elaborated on Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) measures followed in the Jan Aushadhi supply chain. He assured the audience that all generic medicines supplied through these stores undergo rigorous quality testing at NABL-accredited laboratories, ensuring they meet the same quality standards as branded counterparts. This process ensures that affordability does not come at the cost of safety or efficacy.

The session was followed by an interactive discussion, where students and faculty raised pertinent questions related to generic drug perception, pharmacist responsibilities, and future prospects for pharmacy students in public health initiatives like Jan Aushadhi.

Overall, the seminar successfully enhanced participants’ understanding of the role of pharmacists in promoting affordable healthcare and ensuring medication safety and quality. The event concluded with a token of appreciation presented to Mr. Ajith Kumar Thacholi Kommath by Dr. Sabitha M., Principal, Amrita School of Pharmacy. The program was attended by students of Pharm D. 1st to 5th year and B. Pharm. 2nd semester.
