Abstract : Ayurvedic medicines are gaining importance worldwide. The main challenge faced by the Ayurvedic drug manufacturing industry is with respect to the stability of the products. For keeping the products stable till the expiry period, Ayurvedic industry also uses preservatives of various kinds, just as those used in food industry. There are certain legally permissible limits which are to be followed while using these preservatives and even though most of these preservatives are generally recognized as safe by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), many studies have suggested the interactions of these with the ingredients of the food. The present review aims at giving an insight to the interactions and health hazards of preservatives used in Ayurvedic medicines.
