Unit I
Introduction to Theatre
Overview of the fundamental elements of theatre: performance, audience, space, and text-Exploration of the origins of theatre and its evolution across different cultures and historical periods-Introduction to key theatrical terminology, concepts, and theories.
Unit II
Dramatic Forms and Styles
Survey of major dramatic forms and genres, including tragedy, comedy, farce, and melodrama- Study of stylistic elements such as symbolism, realism, expressionism, and surrealism- Analysis of dramatic structure, character development, and narrative techniques-Exploration of experimental and avant-garde theatre movements.
Unit III
Western Theatre
Historical overview of Western theatre traditions from ancient Greece to the present day-Examination of significant playwrights, plays, and theatrical movements in Western theatre history-Analysis of key theatrical innovations and developments, such as the emergence of the proscenium stage and the rise of realism.
Unit IV
Indian Theatre
Survey of the rich and diverse traditions of Indian theatre, including Sanskrit drama, folk theatre, and modern Indian Theatre-Examination of influential playwrights, directors, and performers in Indian theatre history-Analysis of thematic motifs, performance styles, and aesthetic principles in Indian theatrical traditions-Exploration of the intersection of tradition and modernity in Indian theatre.
Unit V
Practical: Acting and Staging
Introduction to basic acting techniques, exercises, and improvisation-Study of the principles of character development, voice, movement, and ensemble work-Practical exploration of staging techniques, including blocking, stage composition, and use of props, and set pieces-Collaborative creation and presentation of short theatrical pieces.
Objectives and Outcomes
Objective:
This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental elements of theatre, including performance dynamics, audience interaction, and the utilization of space within theatrical productions. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, readings, and practical exercises, students will explore various psychological perspectives, research methods, and applications. By the end of the course, students will develop critical thinking skills, research literacy, and a foundational knowledge of psychology that will serve as a basis for further study or application in various professional and academic contexts.

- CO3: Students will examine the historical development of Western theatre traditions, including significant playwrights, plays, and theatrical movements, and analyze key innovations and shifts in theatrical practice.
- CO4: Students will survey the rich traditions of Indian theatre, including Sanskrit drama, folk theatre, and modern Indian theatre, exploring themes, performance styles, and the interplay of tradition and modernity.
- CO5: Students will apply basic acting techniques, character development principles, and staging skills to create and present short theatrical pieces collaboratively, incorporating elements such as blocking, stage composition, and use of props.
