Abstract : The specific objective of this Chapter is to examine the current status of SSR in India in terms of important aspects of collaborative research programmes undertaken by the major SSR institutions, viz., the University Grants Commission (UGC), the universities and departments aided by the UGC and other deemed to be universities and institutions supported by the state and the private sectors. More importantly, the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) has also been established to spearhead and strengthen international collaboration in SSR in the country. Hence, besides the analysis of status of international collaborative programmes promoted by the UGC, the central as well as state universities, the Chapter specifically aims at making a detailed assessment of the international collaborative research activities promoted by the ICSSR as well as the individual institutes coming under the ICSSR system. While the other Chapters in this volume try to provide a holistic picture of the state of SSR in India, this chapter focuses on the scope and scale of international collaborations in social science research as promoted by the leading SSR institutions in the recent period.
