Abstract : Since its discovery by Marcellin Berthelot in 1867, there have been humongous studies based on the synthesis and application of fluorene and its descendent compounds. The novelty and high spectrum of applicability the parent compound possesses in various fields make them a hot topic even today. Fluorene-based Schiff bases have been widely studied in recent years due to their enhanced applicability in sensing and organic electronics. Herein, we report the synthesis of the simplest form of four 9-substituted fluorene-based Schiff base derivatives 3ad and analysed the trends in their absorption and emission characteristics. As obtained from the photophysical studies, all four compounds have distinctive absorption and emission behaviour in solution, with each of them displaying distinct colours in the CIE colour coordinates. Interestingly, out of the synthesised compounds, 3c was found to emit in the green region, indicating that the compound can potentially be used for organic electronic applications. The structural architecture of the synthesised compounds also suggests the possibility of them being used as potential candidates in sensing applications.
