Unit 1
UNIT I Rational Drug Use and Essential Drug concepts 4hours
  • WHO criteria for the selection of essential drugs and advantages of essential drug list (1 hour)
  • Definition of RDU, WHO Drug use indicators (1 hour)
  • Guidelines for rational use of antibiotic, OTC drugs, Injections (1hours)
  • Role of pharmacist in rational drug use (1 hour)
Unit 2
UNIT II Hospital Drug Policy 4 hours

Preliminary Reading: Pharmacy and therapeutic committee

  • Infection control committee (ICC): Objectives, Functions, Composition, Role of pharmacist in ICC (1 hour)
  • Research and Ethics committee: Composition, Responsibilities, procedure, records (1hour)
  • Antibiotic Committee: Objectives, Functions, Composition, Role of pharmacist in antibiotic committee, Development of standard treatment guidelines (2 hour)
Unit 3
UNIT III Hospital Pharmacy Services 3 hours

Preliminary Reading :Organization, location, layout and legal aspects of hospital and community Pharmacy, Roles and responsibilities of hospital and community pharmacist

  • Location, Layout and Role of pharmacist of Central sterile supply unit (CSSU) (1 hour)
  • Purchase procedure for Hotline drugs and role of pharmacist in handling hotline (1 hour)
  • Storage and dispensing of High risk medication list of a hospital (1 hour)
Unit 4
UNIT IV Manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations 4 hours

  • Total parenteral nutrition: Definition, types of parenteral nutrition, indications, complications and method of preparations (2 hour)
  • IV admixtures: Definition, preparation of iv admixtures, incompatibilities of iv admixtures, and its advantages & disadvantages. (2 hours)
Unit 5
UNIT V Different types accreditations in hospital 4 hours
  • NABH accreditation process, benefits and role of pharmacist in management of medications (2 hours)
  • JCI accreditation process, general eligibility requirements and its benefits (2 hour)
Unit 6
UNIT VI Hospital Pharmacy Communications-Newsletter 1 hour
  • Objectives, Layout of newsletter, contents and its advantages
Unit 7
UNIT VII Policy in Handling Radiopharmaceuticals and medical gases 6 hours
  • Radio Pharmaceuticals – Method of manufacture, Therapeutic and diagnostic uses, Handling and packaging 2 hours
  • Policy for the usage and dispensing of radioactive drugs in a hospital 1 hour
  • Policy and procedure while using medical gases 1 hour

Smoking Cessation-WHO guidelines for smoking cessation, 5AS and 5Rs methods, role of pharmacist in smoking cessation program 2 hours

Scope

This course is designed to impart knowledge and skills that are required to practice pharmacy in diverse healthcare settings like hospital and community pharmacies. Depicts the multifaceted roles and responsibilities of pharmacists undertake within various committees, elucidating their collaborative interactions with fellow healthcare professionals. The program seeks to improve patient well-being and overall quality of care. This subject uplifts the practical knowledge about the various actions occurring in a pharmacy and provide assistance in molding an efficient pharmacy professional.

Integrating vital knowledge, skill, and attitude components, the program ensures students to learn principles of rational drug use and the criteria of selection of essential drugs. Students will acquire the knowledge on handling of radiopharmaceuticals and bio-waste management in hospitals. Furthermore, the curriculum addresses accreditation processes relevant to hospital/community pharmacy settings and empowers students to craft and disseminate informative newsletters to stakeholders. Also students understand about the integral role of pharmacist in central sterile supply department and handling of high risk medications and hotline drugs. Essential skills, including responding to minor ailment symptoms, conducting health screening services, providing first aid and participating in home medication review programs are part of the curriculum. Through this holistic approach, students equipped to navigate the complexities of contemporary pharmacy practice with competence and confidence.

Upon successful completion of the course, students shall be able to;
