Syllabus

Unit 1

Cosmetics – Regulatory :

Definition of cosmetic products as per Indian regulation (1 hr), Indian regulatory requirements for labeling of cosmetics (1 hr), Regulatory provisions relating to import of cosmetics(2 hrs), Misbranded and spurious cosmetics (1 hr).

Regulatory provisions relating to manufacture of cosmetics – Conditions for obtaining license, prohibition of manufacture and sale of certain cosmetics, loan license, offences and penalties (2 hrs).

Unit 2

Cosmetics for skin:

Biological aspects –

[Preliminary reading: Structure of skin , Sun protection and Tan protection ],

Cleansing and care needs for face, eye lids, lips, hands, feet, nail, scalp, neck, body and under-arm (1 hr).

Formulation Building blocks addressing skin problems and Design of cosmeceutical skin products –

[Preliminary reading: Problems relating to skin like dry skin, acne, pigmentation, prickly heat, wrinkles and body odor],

Building blocks/excipients for different product formulations of cosmetics/cosmeceuticals ,

Surfactants – Classification and application , Emollients, rheological additives: classification and application (1 hr),

Antimicrobial used as preservatives, their merits and demerits, Factors affecting microbial preservative efficacy (1 hr),

Formulation of Soaps and syndet bars (1 hr).

Perfumes; Classification of perfumes. Perfume ingredients listed as allergens in EU regulation (1 hr),

Controversial ingredients: Parabens, formaldehyde liberators, dioxane etc (1 hr). Building blocks for the formulation of skin care products (1 hr).

Sunscreens classification, SPF and its significance (1 hr),

Challenges in developing sunscreen formulations and its regulatory aspects (1 hr).

Designing of cosmeceutical skin products addressing dry skin, acne, pigmentation, prickly heat, wrinkles, body odor etc. (1 hr).

Building blocks for the formulation and design of skin anti-blemish cream, Lipstick, Skin bleaches and skin lightening (1 hr).

Evaluation of skin cosmetics (2 hrs).

Unit 3

Cosmetics for hair:

Biological aspects –

Structure of hair , Hair growth cycle (1 hr),

Formulation Building blocks addressing hair problems and Design of hair cosmeceutical products –

Cosmetic problems associated with Hair and scalp: Dandruff, Hair fall causes (1hr), Building blocks for the formulation of hair care products including shampoo (1 hr), Designing of cosmeceutical hair products addressing dandruff, and hair fall (2 hrs),

Evaluation of hair cosmetics (2 hrs).

Unit 4

Cosmetics for teeth:

Biological aspects –

[Preliminary reading: Structure of tooth],

Formulation Building blocks addressing teeth problems and Design of cosmeceutical products –

Common problems associated with oral cavity mainly teeth and gums (1 hr),

Building blocks for the formulation of teeth care products including toothpaste (1 hr), Designing of cosmeceutical teeth products addressing dental cavities, bleeding gums, mouth odor, teeth whitening, and sensitive teeth through cosmeceutical formulations (3 hrs).

Evaluation of teeth cosmetics (1hr).

Unit 5

Herbal Cosmetics:

[Preliminary reading: Herbal ingredients used in skin, hair and oral care], Challenges in formulating herbal cosmetics (2 hrs),

Review of guidelines for herbal cosmetics by private bodies like cosmos with respect to preservatives, emollients, foaming agents, emulsifiers and rheology modifiers (4 hrs).

Unit 6

Feminine Hygiene Products:

[Preliminary reading: Anatomy and physiology of the Female Genital Area],

Types and definition of Feminine Hygiene Products, How feminine hygiene products may affect the human body and genital area? (2 hrs),

Required qualities, characteristics and consumer needs,

Types, Building blocks for the formulation of of feminine hygiene products (2 hrs),

Typical quality problems of feminine hygiene products, evaluation and packaging of feminine hygiene products (1 hr),

Emerging new marketed products related to it (1 hr).

Scope

The course gives a comprehensive understanding of advancements in cosmetics and cosmeceuticals. This subject provides a deep insight into regulatory aspects, ensuring students comprehend the legal framework governing cosmetics’ manufacturing, labeling, and marketing, along with compliance and safety measures. Through case studies on sunscreens available in the market, students gain valuable insights into formulation strategies, active ingredients, efficacy, and safety considerations. Exploring the biological aspects of cosmetics helps students grasp the interactions between cosmetic products and biological systems, leading to a better understanding of their physiological effects and potential adverse reactions. The study of formulation techniques equips students with the knowledge of ingredient selection, compatibility, and stability considerations in developing cosmetic products.

The course also prepare students in addressing problems associated with skin, hair, and teeth. Lastly, exploring feminine hygiene products provides students with insights into formulating safe and effective products catering to women’s intimate hygiene needs. Overall, the study of cosmetics and cosmeceuticals enables students to be well-versed in the ever- evolving cosmetic industry, preparing them to contribute to innovation, compliance, and the development of safe and effective cosmetic products.

K4: Apply the acquired knowledge to analyze and solve practical problems in cosmetic formulation and development..

S1: Develop a theoretical understanding of the quality control and quality assurance processes involved in cosmetic product manufacturing.
