The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami: A Borderless Disaster Met with Unbound Compassion

Two decades ago, the Indian Ocean Tsunami claimed over 227,000 lives across 14 countries, marking one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. Amritapuri Ashram near where the Amritapuri Campus is situated was among the worst hit areas. While the scale of devastation was immense, it also brought to light the incredible power of compassion to transcend barriers and bring hope and healing to those affected.

Amma swiftly took action, launching immediate relief and rehabilitation efforts by providing emergency response, which then evolved into long-term recovery initiatives to help survivors rebuild their lives.

Today the humanitarian work led by Amma stands as one of the most multi-faceted, comprehensive, and sustained disaster relief projects ever undertaken by a non-governmental organisation.
