Abstract : Distributed storage is gaining ample prevalence due to the increase in both data and user base. Design of distributed storage system is not limited to the factors: Fault tolerance, Availability, Consistency and Durability. Potential malicious behavior gives rise to untrusted operating environments. Reliability thus becomes one of the most crucial aspects of the design. Structuring reliable distributed storages require a systematic and detailed understanding of the various challenges and the related limitations. Based on extensive reviews, analysis conducted on prominent storage systems the paper streamlines the vital aspects of distributed storage design. The survey, summarization, streamlining presented in the paper facilitates comprehension of the real time challenges and issues of globally networked Distributed Storage Systems. The paper provides a thorough insight into the design of reliable storage systems with respect to architecture, consistency, redundancy and hybrid failures. Significant recommendations presented in the paper facilitate design trade-offs. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.
