Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has been instrumental in advancing water management education in Maruthur village, Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. Through its Live-in-Labs® initiative, students and faculty from the Amrita School for Sustainable Futures and the School of Biotechnology led an extensive water awareness campaign in the village. This program emphasized sustainable water usage and conservation practices, educating residents on how these practices can safeguard local water resources, particularly in times of shortage.
The program provided practical tools for daily water tracking and consumption reduction. Each household received water consumption cards to monitor usage for essential activities like cooking, cleaning, and bathing. By tracking their daily water use, residents gained a clearer understanding of their consumption patterns, which encouraged them to adopt more responsible habits. Practical workshops were also held to demonstrate effective water-saving techniques and the benefits of rainwater harvesting.
A key component of the program was the installation of a community-based water treatment plant under the Jivamritam purified drinking water initiative. This facility supplied clean water to the village and reinforced the value of collective responsibility in water management. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s efforts have thus empowered Maruthur’s residents to take meaningful steps towards sustainable water practices, fostering long-term environmental and community benefits.
