Invited Talk by Dr. Mar Masson at Amrita School of Pharmacy

Dr. Mar Masson, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Iceland, delivered an invited talk at Amrita School of Pharmacy on 23rd October 2024. His talk was on the antimicrobial activity of chitosan and its derivatives, emphasizing the structure-activity relationship (SAR). Chitosan, a natural polymer derived from chitin, has gained significant attention due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. Dr. Mason highlighted how the antimicrobial efficacy of chitosan is highly dependent on factors such as molecular weight, degree of deacetylation, and chemical modifications.

Dr. Masson explained how structural modifications, such as the introduction of quaternary ammonium groups and other modifications, enhance chitosan’s solubility and antimicrobial potency. The talk emphasized the importance of fine-tuning chitosan’s structural properties to maximize its antimicrobial efficacy. Dr. Masson concluded by discussing his ongoing research and its potential applications.

The talk was attended by the batches of B. Pharm. 2021, M. Pharm. 2023, Ph. D. scholars and faculty.
