Abstract : Surficial process such as landslides occur due to many factors. The properties of underlying material such as soil and rock are very heterogeneous as well as anisotropic by nature. It has been noted that grain size, porosity, pore pressure and joint alignment of these materials contribute to seismic slope stability. Apart from the above mentioned properties the history of the rock formations and sediment deposits contribute significantly to slope failures. In this work we investigate the relationship among some of these properties and their role in causing earthquake induced landslides. Specific regions in India, China, Taiwan and Japan have been investigated and an attempt to create a statistical model to predict earthquake induced landslides based on these properties has been presented here.
