About

The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Amrita School of Dentistry is conducting a National Level ICMR workshop from December 2 to 7th 2024. Amrita School of Dentistry, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences Kochi.

This course prepares researchers and clinicians to develop, conduct and report robust, high quality systematic reviews of different evidence types in order to provide the strongest possible evidence to inform decision making or clinical guideline development in healthcare.

The present course is delivered based on THE JBI MODEL OF EVIDENCE-BASED HEALTHCARE. JBI’s approach to evidence-based healthcare is unique. JBI considers evidence-based healthcare as decision-making that considers the feasibility, appropriateness, meaningfulness and effectiveness (FAME) of healthcare practices.

Important Dates:

Module 1

Introduction to Evidence-based Healthcare and the Systematic Review of Evidence

Learn about evidence-based healthcare, creating systematic review protocols, and key material regarding searching the literature. This is a prerequisite for Modules 2 & 3.

Module 2

The Systematic Review of Quantitative Evidence

Learn about common research designs such as randomised controlled trials, how to critically appraise research, identify important sources of bias in research, an introduction to commonly encountered statistics in clinical research, when and how to conduct meta-analysis.

Module 3

The Systematic Review of Evidence Generated by Qualitative Research, Narrative and Text

Learn about the importance of qualitative research in healthcare, common qualitative research designs such as phenomenology and ethnography, how to critically appraise qualitative research, identify different methods for synthesising qualitative research and learn when and how to perform a meta-synthesis of qualitative research.

Scoping Review Workshop

This one-day workshop enables participants to explore the theories and concepts relating to scoping reviews and other types of evidence synthesis, and equip participants with the knowledge and tools required to successfully plan for and undertake and report a scoping review following the JBI approach.

Course Objectives
  1. Differentiate between systematic and traditional
  2. Identify the relevant type of systematic review of a particular
  3. Develop research questions and logic grid for the literature
  4. Develop a protocol for a systematic
  5. Critically analyze the methodological quality of selected articles
  6. Perform meta-analysis and meta-synthesis of selected studies using JBI SUMARI

Who is eligible for the course ?

Participants must be from one of the following states:

  • Tamil Nadu
  • Kerala
  • Puducherry
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands
Eligibility Requirements
  1. Professional Background:
    • Health care professionals, researchers, academicians, and students in the fields of dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, or allied health sciences.
    • Faculty members and researchers engaged in teaching, research, or clinical practice.
    • Postgraduate students (PhD, MDS, MD, MS, MPH, MPharm) who are interested in developing systematic reviews as part of their thesis or dissertation.
  2. Academic and Research Interest:
    • Individuals with a strong interest in evidence-based health care and systematic review methodology.
    • Prior experience in conducting primary research, publishing articles, or familiarity with research methodologies is desirable.
    • Participants who have prospective titles or topics for a systematic review will be given preference.
  3. Institutional Affiliation:
    • Preference will be given to participants affiliated with academic institutions, research organizations, and healthcare institutions within the eligible states.
  4. Technical Requirements:
    • Basic computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet browsing.
    • Ability to bring a personal laptop or arrange access to a computer for the duration of the workshop.
  5. Commitment:
    • Willingness to attend all six days of the workshop and actively participate in hands-on sessions, group activities, and assignments.
    • Commitment to complete the systematic review or scoping review initiated during the workshop with the guidance provided.
  6. Language Proficiency:
    • Proficiency in English, as the course will be conducted in English and all materials will be provided in English.
Selection Process
  • Participants will be selected based on the relevance of the course to their professional role, research interest, and motivation as demonstrated in the application process.
  • Preference may be given to those who are currently working on or planning systematic reviews.
  • Adequate representation from the eligible states will be considered during the selection process.
