Abstract : Cobalt-free layered cathode materials are of interest for advanced Li-ion batteries especially, layered Li[Li0.2Ni0.2Mn0.6]O2 nanoparticles (Li- and Mn-Rich, LMR). Herein, we present results of two different particle sizes controlled by the lithium precursors during sol–gel synthesis. LMR with particle size ~ 40 nm (LMR_40) exhibited better performance compared to LMR_150 (size ~ 150 nm) at both room temperature and at an elevated temperature of 55°C. However, the LMR_40 displayed more voltage fade compared to LMR_150 at both room temperature and elevated temperature cycling. LMR_40 is a potential cathode for high energy density Li-ion batteries and surface-engineering would improve the performances further.
