Abstract : According to published data, there are about one thousand cupola based ferrous foundry units operating in and around Coimbatore with an annual output of six lakhs tonnes per annum. Most of the foundries in and around Coimbatore are in the SSI sector. These units face acute shortage of quality manpower from engineers to skilled technicians due to various reasons including mass recruitment by IT companies. Also Coimbatore region has many good technical institutions (3-deemed universities,3- autonomous Anna university institutions and plenty of other good engineering colleges). According to statistics, this region alone produces about 1400-1500 Mechanical, Production and Metallurgy Engineering graduates. This paper has two parts. First part discussing innovative tactics and IT tools like internet (Collaborative Product Commerce) for improving competitiveness of the casting industries. Here attempts have been made to show how the academia can play a vital role to meet the intellectual manpower requirement of casting industry. The second part discussing about Industry - Institute interaction with our university being a model (Amrita Vishwa Vidya Peetham). To start tailor made programs with value based and imparting technical, vocational skills coupled with attitudinal training which would improve the productivity of the employees.
