The Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham won the First Consolation Prize at the renowned IMTEX International Exhibition held in Bangalore 2024. This is the fourth time in a row that the department has received an award at IMTEX, showing its excellence in modern technology. The project called “Humanoid Mobile Robot for Multipurpose Societal Applications” got a lot of attention for its new way of using robots to help society. It was students start-up project funded by DST- Nidhi Prayas. This Award winning Humanoid Robot presentation at Imtex 24 is published in the Modren manufacturing India magzine.
The developed robot can be used not only in industrial pick and place operations, but also in health care industry. Especially when there are elderly people and small kids; who need special attention. At home, the grandparents need to take their medications or young children needs to be fed at the right time. With this in mind, we are proposing a single solution for all these – “a 2 wheeled humanoid robot”, a robot that is controlled by Alexa. This robot will be accessible from anywhere, as long as one has access to the internet. Hence the robot can deliver food and medicine to those with mobility impairment. By connecting the robot with Alexa, one can control it from anywhere using internet. The Robotic Operating System is used here, which is a very good platform for the navigation of the autonomous robots. A map-based navigation system is used in the robot, because the main area of working of the robot is in a home or hospital etc. So, for getting the map of the robot, it will take the map using the lidar sensors and after that the robot will start functioning as an autonomous robot. Using thermal camera imaging the robot can be used to measure body temperature without any contact and also identify whether a person wears a mask or not This project represents a significant advancement in robotics, paving the way for future innovations in humanoid technology.
It all stared during 2008 with the inspiration and guidance of our Chancellor Amma to make an Humanoid Robot to teach Yogasanas , Surya Namaskar and IAM technique exercises to the students. It was well received and implemented to benefit the society.
