About

As part of the “Amrit Sapthathi“, a Year of 70 Tech Events we are offering the next seminar titled, “Particles Accelerators and their Applications” at Amriteshwari Hall by Shri. Chandra Pillai, Scientist (Retired), Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico, United States.

Date : January 4, 2024

Time : 10.50 am – 11.50 am

Venue : Amriteshwari Hall, Amritapuri

Shri Chandra Pillai, a retired scientist, has a distinguished career in nuclear physics, with a significant impact on the research conducted at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). He graduated from Oregon State University in 1985, having completed his thesis project at LANL. Subsequently, he pursued a post-doc at the University of California, Los Angeles. During his tenure at LANL from 1988 to 2022, he played a pivotal role as the leader of the Beam Physics Team, overseeing the design, maintenance, and operations of the half-mile-long Linear Accelerator, now known as the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). This facility is utilized for basic and applied research by approximately 500 users worldwide, and it contributes to the production of around 5 PhDs annually. Chandra’s responsibilities included machine startup, beam tuning, conducting improvements, and participating in experiments. He has also been involved in collaborative studies with similar facilities in the USA and has published about 50 papers in the fields of beam physics, accelerator applications, and nuclear physics. His expertise spans areas such as material science, biological science, proton radiography, and medical isotope production using both protons and neutrons. Chandra’s contributions have significantly impacted the field of physics and research and have been widely recognized within the scientific community.
