Water Reuse at Amrita: A Model of Sustainability

Aligned with the Chancellor’s Vision of Sustainable Water Management

At Amrita, sustainability is at the heart of our operations, with a remarkable 80% of water reused across our campuses. This achievement is a testament to the institution’s commitment to the Chancellor’s vision of innovative and responsible water management.

This policy outlines the key strategies to ensure efficient and effective water reuse across all campuses.

1. Harnessing Greywater

Amrita will implement advanced greywater treatment systems to process wastewater from sinks, showers, and laundry facilities. Treated greywater will be repurposed for irrigation, toilet flushing, and cooling systems, reducing dependency on freshwater sources.

2. Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater harvesting systems will capture water from rooftops and other surfaces, providing a reliable source for non-potable applications such as landscaping, cooling, and fire suppression. Groundwater recharge systems will also be established to replenish aquifers and maintain ecological stability.

3. Wastewater Recycling

State-of-the-art wastewater treatment plants will be operated to recycle water to meet stringent quality standards. Recycled water will be utilized for critical non-potable purposes, including irrigation and cooling systems.

4. Technological Advancements

Amrita will adopt cutting-edge filtration and treatment technologies to enhance water reuse efficiency. Real-time monitoring systems will be implemented to track water reuse volumes and assess their contribution to reducing overall water demand.

5. Stakeholder Engagement

Educational campaigns and training programs will be conducted to raise awareness about sustainable water practices. These initiatives will engage the Amrita community, fostering a culture of collective responsibility towards water conservation and reuse.

Impact and Vision

Through these initiatives, Amrita meets a substantial portion of its water needs via reuse, setting a benchmark in sustainable resource management. The institution continues to scale these efforts, integrating innovation and collaboration to meet future water challenges while staying true to the Chancellor’s visionary leadership.
