Provide free drinking water for students, staff and visitors (e.g. drinking water fountains).

Free and safe drinking water is provided at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. There are more than 50 drinking water fountains installed across all campuses, conveniently located in academic blocks, libraries, hostels, and labs. The university uses water treatment technologies depending on the quality of the source water and ensures water is devoid of physical, chemical, and biological contaminants. The selection of the technology is such that water is not wasted unnecessarily during the treatment process. The university encourages students, faculty, and visitors to bring reusable bottles and refill them for free at the water fountains. This helps to reduce the use of single-use plastic bottles.

In addition to the drinking water fountains, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham also has a number of water coolers and dispensers located throughout its campuses. These provide access to chilled and filtered drinking water.

The university is committed to providing its students, faculty, and visitors with access to clean and safe drinking water.

To maintain high water quality standards, these facilities are equipped with advanced filtration and purification systems, such as reverse osmosis (RO) and Ultraviolet (UV) treatment, effectively removing contaminants and ensuring safe drinking water. Regular maintenance schedules are in place to ensure optimal functionality, with periodic inspections and servicing conducted to address any issues promptly.

The physical and chemical parameters like color, Alkalinity, pH value, Taste and odor, Turbidity, Total dissolved solids, Calcium, Chlorine, and Total coliform are checked for testing of water quality and all the tested parameters are under the acceptable standard range.

Jivamritam Water Purification System Developed by Amrita

The Jivamritam system has a dual sand-and-activated-carbon filter to remove suspended particles and turbidity, followed by micron filters of five-micron and one-micron filtration. Each system also includes an ultraviolet water-purifier to remove pathogenic contamination, and two storage tanks —2,000-litre-inlet and a 1,000-litre outlet — to keep treated and untreated water separate. The filtered-water tanks are integrated with taps to provide drinking water at the location of the system. constituted of four levels of purification (i) a dual-medium activated carbon and four layers of marble crushed sand to reduce excess chlorine and turbidity from the water, (ii) a five micron filter (iii) a one micron filter for removing suspended particles and bacteria larger than 1 μm, and (iv) an ultraviolet (UV) lamp for disinfection from pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, etc. The remaining bacteria after the micron level filtration were disinfected using the UV lamp to ensure the safety of drinking water.

Championing Inclusive and Sustainable Access to Safe Drinking Water

The university prioritizes accessibility by ensuring that all water points are designed to be user-friendly, including provisions for individuals with disabilities. Temporary water facilities are also set up during events and conferences to accommodate the needs of visitors.

In line with its sustainability goals, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham employs energy-efficient water coolers and has implemented rainwater harvesting systems to supplement its water supply. These initiatives not only provide free drinking water but also promote environmental responsibility and resource conservation.

Through these comprehensive measures, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham ensures that all members of its community have access to safe and free drinking water, reflecting its commitment to health, well-being, and sustainability.
