Abstract : A novel idea of choosing plywood as a substrate for radio frequency applications in marine industry is investigated. Plywood is extensively employed in marine industry. Analysis of microstrip transmission line and microstrip patch antenna employing plywood as substrate is presented. The resonant frequency is set to be GPS frequency (1.5GHz). Simulation results employing ANSYS High Frequency Structure Simulator are presented. Prototype of microstrip transmission line and antenna were fabricated and measured in the L-band (1-2GHz). Voltage Standing Wave Ratio <2, with bandwidth greater than 300MHz is observed. The proposed antenna has omnidirectional pattern with gain around 2dB. The simulated and experimental results exhibit good agreement and provides sufficient scope for deploying plywood based low profile radio frequency electronics systems for marine applications.
