Abstract : Pollution of air which is one of the major concerns of 21st century and is mainly occurred due to the fossil fuels like petrol and diesel used in automobile engines. These engines emits poisonous and unburnt gases like Carbon dioxide, Nitrogen oxides, Hydrocarbons, particulate matter emissions which has pernicious effects on environment and on human health. Moreover, the price of these fuels is increasing day by day due to its high demand across the world. In addition to this, due to excess production and usage, these fuels are on the verge of depletion. So, continuous efforts are being made by researchers in order to develop an environmental friendly fuel. To overcome this energy crisis, various alternative fuels with distinct properties are being studied. The present work emphasizes on blends of diesel and petrol with turpentine and its effects on performance characteristics and emission characteristics like thermal efficiency of engine, Brake Specific fuel Consumption etc. Addition of cetane boosters and how it effects the parameters of diesel engine is also discussed. The assessment of earlier studies led to the conclusion that turpentine is also suitable alternative fuel in engines.
