Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru campus, conducted a 6 day ISTE (Indian Society for Technical Education) Short Term Training Program on “Electric Power System” from 10th to 15th July, 2017.
The workshop was an initiative started by IIT Kharagpur under National Mission on Education through ICT supported by Ministry of Human Resource Development for the faculty members of various engineering institutes via distant education mode. This workshop is a part of ISTE Short Term Training Programmes (STTPs) under Train Ten Thousand Teachers (T10KT) project using 353 established remote centres across India.
The workshop was a two week course, which comprised of online activity equivalent to one week from 12th June, 2017, to 15th July, 2017, and, physical participation at remote center from 10th July, 2017, to 15th July, 2017. The participating teachers have completed the equivalent of two-week full time work online, spread over 6 physical weeks where video lectures and assignments were uploaded beforehand. Offline assignments were uploaded by the participants within the stipulated time. After completing the online assignments participants assembled at the Remote Center, for 6 days face to face interaction and lecture sessions through A-VIEW and completed team assignments, tutorials, quizzes, etc.
The main focus of the workshop was to enhance the teaching effectiveness in core engineering subjects. The subject under focus was Electric Power System and the lectures were spearheaded by three professors: Professor N. K. Kishore, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur; Professor Shreevardhan A. Soman, Department of Electrical Engineering, IITBombay; and Professor Gautam Bandyopadhyay, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIEST Kolkata.
The topics covered included: components of power system and introduction and significance of power system; brief review of steady state and dynamic operations of power system; overview of a laboratory course on power systems and importance of renewables and reliable operation of power system. Each session was well planned and the topics were explained by the professors followed by question and answer session. At the end of the workshop a small test was conducted in order to check how well the topics were grasped by the participants.
The training programme was attended by around 10,000 teachers through various remote centers with Amrita School of Engineering, Bangalore being one of them. It was indeed a commendable project undertaken by IIT Kharagpur in order to educate the teachers. A total of 22 participants attended the event and 7 were from other engineering colleges.
The event was co-ordinated by Dr. K. Deepa, Assistant Professor, Electrical and Electronics Department, Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru.
