Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri campus, Kollam, received the State Pollution Control Award 2017, instituted by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), on 7th June, 2017, as a part of the World Environment Day celebrations. The award was presented by the Minister for Industries, Sports and Youth Affairs, Shri. A. C. Moideen at IMG Hall, Trivandrum.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham was praised for its substantial and sustained efforts in pollution control and for initiatives in environmental protection. Br. Sudeep, Director, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus, and Dr. Jyothi S. N., Principal, Amrita School of Engineering, Amritapuri Campus, jointly received the award.
The award-giving ceremony showcased green initiatives of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in the areas of Waste Management, Water Management, Energy Management, Social Responsibility Initiatives and Awareness Campaigns. It was noted that the Amritapuri campus had adopted the most efficient and systematic ways of waste management by ensuring primary sorting of solid waste at the source. There were also sorting stations for itemized segregation of recyclable waste and proper handling of non-recyclable waste which guaranteed zero liability and full protection to the environment. Food waste is treated using Bioneer Composter System, which can handle 800 kg waste per day, and Organic Waste Composter 500, capable of handling more than 14,000 kg waste per day. Composting was accomplished through Windrow and Vermi-composting techniques. The processing of non-biodegradable waste is through a Waste Burner which has a capacity of 150 kg/hour.
As a part of the Water Management initiative, an ETP plant recycles 93,000m3/year of water. Energy management includes solar projects and power saving initiatives that have replaced 60W Tube lights with 15W CFL Lamps and also 150 W Halogen lights with 50W LED Lamps (street lighting).
