Abstract : This paper provides an overview of the DC microgrid technologies including microgrid architectures, faults, various grounding scheme, power quality issues and the study of different harmonics present within the network. DC micro grids have become more common over the past few years due to several advantages compared to their AC equivalent. Microgrids powered by renewable energy sources can offer high reliability and efficiency in a very economical manner if connected to the DC distribution system. A microgrid using a DC bus can avoid a variety of power conversion steps, thus minimizing the losses incurred compared to the AC bus. Although the reliability of the DC microgrid has improved further with the arrival of new electronic power devices, the practical implementation of the system still suffers from the problems of power quality and device limitations. This paper investigates and compares the power loss and harmonics for different semiconductor devices with the help of MATLAB.
