Abstract : It is well-known that the human calculation is always prone to error while measuring a complex structure or an object using a contact type. So this paper aims at calculating the area of a complex structure or an irregular object using a non-contact measuring device. This paper also describes how ultrasonic and RPLiDAR can be used for calculating the area of an object. This research study has used Ultrasonic sensors and RPLiDAR sensors. The ultrasonic sensor is interfaced via Arduino whereas RPLiDAR is directly interfaced to the System/PC. Ultrasonic sensors measure the distance through emitting sound waves and it will convert the emitted sound into electrical signals whereas RPLiDAR uses laser triangulation and which is high-speed vision acquisition. The ultrasonic sensor can measure distances of 10cm to 4m whereas RPLiDAR measures distances of about 100cm to 6m. This experiment shows that the Ultrasonic sensor accuracy varies from 92.20% −92.88%, whereas the LiDAR sensor varies from 92.55% −93.03%. From this, the proposed research study can conclude that the LiDAR sensor is slightly more accurate than the Ultrasonic sensor.
