Course Objective:

To provide a comprehensive training in Fetal Cardiology for post DM/DNB fellows of Pediatric Cardiology including diagnosis, counseling, perinatal management and in-utero therapy of fetuses with congenital heart defects. A shorter course ( 3 months) is also planned for post Fetal Medicine trainees in order to enhance their skills in diagnosing CHDs in the fetus and peri-partum care of fetuses with critical defects.

Post-DM/DNB fellowship (Post-Doctoral / Doctoral / PG / PG Diploma /Graduate / Diploma / Certificate)

Duration

6-months for post pediatric cardiology candidates,

3-months for Fetal Medicine specialists.

Eligibility for admission

DM/DNB Pediatric Cardiology ( for the 6-months course), Fellowship in fetal medicine from an accredited training program ( 2 years) for the 3-months course

Selection of candidates

The course shall be announced in Amrita Website. Candidates shall be requested to email their CVs to AIMS. Selection will be based on direct interview of candidates screened by assessment of CVs ( 3 candidates maybe shortlisted). Only one candidate will be selected from the respective fields of Pediatric Cardiology ( 6-months course) or Fetal Medicine ( 3-months course) at a time.

Program Content

  • Training in skills to perform a comprehensive fetal echocardiography – including anatomy delineation, cardiac function assessment, cardiac rhythm assessment, use of Doppler, use of newer technology like 3D/4D STIC fetal echo.
  • Basic understanding of extra-cardiac evaluation, including major associated defects, genetic evaluation, understanding the indications and technique of genetic testing by amniocenetsis. This will be done in co-ordination with fetal medicine department.
  • Acquiring skills and expertise in counselling of families following diagnosis of heart defect in the fetus. Besides clinical knowledge about the heart defect, the natural history, treatment options after birth and outcomes of treatment, humane qualities like empathy and compassion also will be emphasised in the training.
  • Planning peri-natal care of fetuses with critical heart defects in liaison with obstetrics and neonatology.
  • Post-natal cardiac care and planning lifesaving cardiac procedures.
  • Maintaining the fetal cardiac database, monthly audits of the unit performance.
  • Presentation of journal clubs, seminars on a weekly basis.
  • Research activities like thesis, writing up scientific papers and case reports.
