Dr. Ram. R. Bishu, Professor, Department of Mechanical and Material Engineering, University of Nebraska – Lincoln, also the Education Chair, American Society for Quality, conducted the “Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Training and Certification” for second year MBA students of Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore.
The two-day Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt training provided a detailed understanding of the methodologies, tools, and techniques of Lean Six Sigma Methodology necessary for organizations to enhance their quality and performance. The training taught the students techniques to eliminate wastage in a company, including excess production, unwanted delay, non-utilized talents, inventory, transportation, etc.
Dr. Bishu began the session with a brief explanation of the necessity of implementing Six Sigma Quality Control in the modern management scenario. “100% effectiveness is not 100% effective. Six Sigma is a metric that determines the quality level at 99.9997% performance for products and processes. It is a benchmark for our product and process capability for comparison to be “best-in-class”. Six sigma follows the philosophy of ‘High quality = High Price’ as opposed to “High quality = Low Price,” he said.
Dr. Bishu taught students various aspects of leading teams, training and mentoring employees for the reduction in costs, cycle-times, and improved quality. He introduced different phases of Six Sigma — ‘DMAIC’ a.k.a. Define, Measure, Analysis, Improve and Control – essential for the companies to measure and make strategic management decisions. The training instilled a data-driven decision-making approach for leading problem-solving projects. Dr. Bishu ended the session by presenting various examples of the organizations such as IBM, Texas Instruments, Citi Bank and Kodak, who utilize Six Sigma Quality Control for their performance enhancement.
Once the training is completed, the students were offered certificates in “Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt”.
Dr. Bishu also dedicated part of the session to laying the foundation of Business Analytics. Business Analytics is offered as a major domain for MBA in Amrita School of Business from this academic year. He explained Business Intelligence, its components and went on to explain various tools for predicting future trends and behaviors, allowing businesses to make proactive and knowledge-driven decisions.
