Abstract : Nosocomial infections emerging due to the medical devices represent a notable challenge for healthcare systems and professionals. The majority of these infections are due to biofilm formation on the polymeric surface which is resistant toward eradication and demand for extensive antibiotic treatment, device nonfunctionality, and removal. To counter these infections, efforts are been underway to modify the polymeric surfaces of diverse medical devices as coatings and/or impregnation with molecules having potent antibiofouling and biofilm inhibition properties. These strategies might result in the leaching of these active compounds with potent activity from the device surfaces that prevent initial adhesion and further biofilm formation. This article highlights the role of diverse biosurfactants secreted from various sources as a strategy to reduce microbial adhesion and biofilm inhibition. Biosurfactants with potent antibiofilm and anti-adhesion properties are detailed. In addition, the need for developing medical devices that coated and/ or impregnated with biosurfactants was also specified.
