Abstract : Despite advancements in bearing surface of acetabular cup over the years and decreased wear rates, acetabular revision is inevitable in cases where there is aseptic loosening and Osteolysis due to wear particulate debris ascribable to frictional wear. In this study, finite element (FE) contact and wear analysis is conducted over acetabular cup with different biomaterials for various daily activities. Stainless steel 316LVM and zirconia femoral head with UHMWPE, PEEK and ceramic acetabular liners were considered for modeling the metal-on-polymer (MoP) and ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) articulated acetabular cup. Subsequently, modified Archard’s wear model was followed to obtain the volumetric wear loss per year of the acetabular liners. The study shows that surface roughness is a critical factor for wear in acetabular liner and results shows that wear in UHMWPE liner is highest while zirconia liner exhibited least wear.
