Abstract : The present study evaluates two composite coatings viz. DLC/CrN and AlCrN/CrN for its anti-wear performance against Ti6Al4V for application in hip implant. DLC/CrN exhibited higher strain hardening exponent and lower fraction of plastic work attributed to its elastic nature. The friction dynamics of DLC/CrN-Ti6Al4V tribopair was in lower range propounding to lower wear rate. While the primary wear mechanism of DLC/CrN was tensile cracking and abrasion, AlCrN/CrN had undergone severe material transfer and galling. Most importantly, upon EDS analysis, it was seen that release of undesirable cytotoxic vanadium content from Ti6Al4V was more on AlCrN/CrN worn out surface ascribed to high affinity between aluminum and titanium thus facilitating easy disintegration of Ti6Al4V counterbody.
