The students of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus celebrated India’s 69th Independence Day on August 15 by conducting an Bharatam Cleanup Drive. The cleanup and awareness drive was organized by Amrita Sanjeevani- the Student Seva Association.
With inexhaustible energy and vigor, about 200 volunteers comprising staff members as well as students, took it upon themselves to clean the surrounding areas of the campus and at the same time provide awareness to the local people on the severity of the waste disposal dilemma in India. With the support of the local representatives, the 2015 cleanup drive was inaugurated by Shri. Iqbal, President, Congress Mandalam Committee, Smt. Sushuma Thangachi, 13th Ward Member, Clappana Panchayat, Smt. Sheela Sarasan, 13th Ward Member and Ex-President, Clappana Panchayat, and Smt. Jalaja Raveendran, 1st Ward Member, Kulashekarapuram Panchayat. In addition to the cleanup drive, an awareness initiative was introduced to the local community on the effects of improper waste disposal under the guidance of our beloved AMMA. As a part of the initiative, the common people were given napkins so that they would avoid spitting in public places.
With the goal of freeing India from waste materials, the volunteers have given their very best in this venture and they truly feel that by cleaning our environment and motivating others to do so, we can honor one and all who fought for the freedom of India, and embrace a better and cleaner future.
