Amrita’s Department of Social Work hosts Training Program on Anti-Human Trafficking Interventions for Labor Exploitation

The Department of Social Work, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham organized a two day training program on “Anti-Human Trafficking Interventions with a special focus on Labor Exploitation” at the Coimbatore campus on April 16-17, 2015. The program was organized in collaboration with International Justice Mission (IJM-Chennai) and Prerana– Mumbai.

On December 2, 2014 at the Vatican in Rome, Chancellor Mata Amritanandamayi joined Pope Francis and ten other world religious leaders in a ceremony to sign a declaration against human trafficking and slavery. Chancellor Amma said on the occasion, “I am an optimistic that all global faiths are uniting together to inspire both spiritual and practical actions towards society ending the horror of slavery and human trafficking.”  This training program was a small step to translate the declaration into action.

A team of six experts from International Justice Mission Chennai and Mumbai conducted substantive training sessions. The program attracted participation from 22 external participants from all over India like stake holders, service providers, special Juvenile Police Officers, special Police Officers under ITP Act, Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) Police Officers, District Child Protection Officers, Juvenile Justice Board members, NGOs and teachers from various schools. They took active part in the training program.

“I am taking back substantial learning from this programme which I will be able to practice in my day to day work,” a representative from Integrated Child Protection Scheme remarked.

“I have gained significant clarity about the relevant legal provisions and their applications. This will help me to assist a trafficking victim and bring the offenders to justice,” said a Senior Woman Police Officer.

“The program wasn’t just an eye opener. It also gave us tools to intervene and help the victims,” shared a teacher.
