For the fourth successive year, the Computer Society of India (CSI) student branch of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore has been judged to be the best student branch in India. This is a significant achievement, considering the fact that there are more than 600 colleges and universities in India, with CSI student Chapters including reputed institutions like NITs at Surathkal, Kozhikode, Jamshedpur; Anna University; VIT and SRM. The student branch, which is hosted by Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) was recognized for its successful conduct of several co-curricular activities and also for supporting the CSE department in organizing conferences, workshops and contests.
The CSI student chapter organized workshops on game development, android, multimedia streaming and big data analytics during the academic year, 2013-2014. It also organized contests in Code Wars based on SCRATCH by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and techno plan competitions for the benefit of the students of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore. The student branch also supported the CSE department in organizing the 15th International Conference on Distributed Computing and Networking (ICDCN), which is one of the most prestigious distributed computing conferences worldwide.
Computer Society of India (CSI) is India’s first and largest professional body for IT professionals with over 115,000 members all over India and aboard. Formed in 1965, CSI was instrumental in mentoring the Indian IT industry during its formative years as also launching the first training, certification and human resource development programmes in computing in India. CSI represents India in various international bodies like UNESCO, IFIP, SEARCC and ICANN.
Computer Society of India (CSI) has set up Special Interest Groups (SIG) to promote activities and research in few focused areas like e-governance, Cyber Security, Green IT, FOSS and Artificial Intelligence. Various initiatives for the academic and research community include publishing of a world-class computer science journal, CSI Transactions on ICT published by Springer. Another initiative is the National e-governance awards, into its eleventh year, which is presented to government departments at national and state level for IT usage for delivery of services to citizens.
