Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amritapuri campus emphasizes on off-the-shelf research to create new knowledge and explore future challenges in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering domain. The department of Electrical and Electronics engineering has been offering Ph.D. programs since 2012. The diversity of academic interests is reflected in the breadth of theoretical and practical research activities of the faculty members. The discipline has a healthy mixture of young and experienced faculty members, all of whom display high levels of enthusiasm and dedication. In accession to teaching and research; the faculty members are actively involved in organizing technical workshops, faculty development programs, short courses in focus areas and visits of scholars to create an environment conducive to experiential learning. Further, the drive for learning doesn’t end here, the faculty gets involved in IEEE activities, creating an environment of industry-oriented learning by inviting the luminaries from various domains for expert lectures.
Research interests of the faculty include power electronics application in renewable energy technologies, power electronic drives, power management in electric vehicle, multilevel inverters, image processing, signal processing, robotics, embedded systems, VLSI, microgrid etc., Funded research labs are being set up in the few listed research areas through Amrita Internal Seed Funding and Extramural Grants received from VGST, and DRDO.
The Ph.D. program in Electrical & Electronics Engineering at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, offered by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Coimbatore campus, is a rigorous and comprehensive academic endeavour designed to cultivate advanced expertise and research capabilities since 2005. The program is tailored to meet the needs of aspiring scholars and researchers who seek to contribute significantly to advancing electrical engineering knowledge and its applications to various domains.
The department has a pool of outstanding faculty with doctorates from globally known institutions and universities who continuously engage in research with partners worldwide. The distinguished faculty members are experts in various areas of electrical and allied engineering, including but not limited to power systems, control systems, power electronic drives, smart grids and microgrids, electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, energy conservation and management, deregulated power system, variable frequency drives, signal and image processing, microelectronics, artificial intelligence, hyperspectral image processing, robotics, sensor networks, automotive electronics, embedded systems, etc. These faculty members actively engage in cutting-edge research projects, providing students with opportunities to collaborate on groundbreaking research initiatives. Funded research labs are being set up in different research areas through extramural grants from DST, Vinnova, Microsoft, DHI, MSME, DRDO, CEFIPRA, Continental Autonomous Mobility, Rural Energy Systems, and many more.

The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering has a blend of teaching and research activities pertinent to both electrical engineering and electronics engineering. The team of faculty share a common vision of imparting high-quality teaching interlaced with design, research and development. We firmly believe that research and teaching must maintain a symbiotic relationship to keep the academic atmosphere fresh and responsive to the rapidly rising scientific and technological advancements. The curriculum is devised in such a way, that the growing young technologists gets imbibed with solidity of time-tested ideas on which one can develop a niche and inclination towards learning technological advancements. At the same time, we are also acutely aware of the need to incorporate flexibility into the curriculum that allows a student to explore avenues through various subject electives that appeal to student.
The department offers B. Tech in Electrical and Electronics engineering since 2004, M.Tech in Power Electronics since 2010, M.Tech in Embedded Systems since and Ph.D. programme since 2012. The diversity of academic interests is reflected in the breadth of theoretical and laboratory courses that we offer and the research activities of the faculty members. The Electrical and Electronics Engineering discipline aims to impart a strong hands-on flavor to the courses, and it, therefore, places great emphasis on the laboratory component, internships, and projects. Most of our B. Tech. and M. Tech. students carry out summer internships at reputed industries in India and abroad.

Four types of applicants are eligible to apply for admission to the Ph.D. program:
Applicants holding a master’s degree are eligible to apply for admission. Examples of master’s degree include:
All applicants are expected to have strong academic records.
Applicants with a full-time appointment at the University or another academic/R&D organization can apply for part-time admission. Other eligibility requirements for such applicants are the same as for full-time applicants. Part-time students can proceed at a slower pace in completing their doctoral requirements.
Exceptional students pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree here at Amrita can apply for the Integrated Ph.D. program subject to the requirement that he or she completes all the requirements of the bachelor’s or master’s degree before ‘advancement to candidacy.’
Exceptional students who satisfy the eligibility requirements of Amrita and Amrita’s International Partner University (IPU), as stated in the Dual Ph.D. MoU signed between Amrita and the IPU are eligible for admission to the Dual Ph.D. program. Full time PhD scholars are eligible for Dual Degree Program.
