Amrita Vidyalayam students win the IRIS 2012 Grand Award

Nayana K. R. and Aishwarya C. A. from Amrita Vidyalayam, Davangere wins the IRIS 2012 Grand Award in the Senior Category for their project ‘Vaina’s Square Lemma: Extension of Pythagoras Theorem on Division of Equal Squares’.

They are among the 10 students to represent India at International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in May 2013, in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Another team of students Hima Bindu T. V. & Bhargavi N. Sarode from the same school have won Silver for their presentation in Chemistry: ‘Making Ink from Waste Tea Decoction’.

The program is conducted by Initiative for Research & Innovation in Science 2012 (IRIS) sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Intel Corporation. IRIS is one of India’s largest science initiatives for students from classes 5-12. The event held at BAL Bhawan, New Delhi from November 29 to Decemeber 2, 2012 recorded participation from schools across the nation in large numbers.

Two other groups from same school were recognized for their participation: Athreya Sharma & Bhagavathi Sharma in Medicine and Health Sciences: ‘Crude Drugs as an Anti-Cancer Agent’ and Ganga K. M. for her presentation in Engineering – ‘Electrical and Mechanical: Automatic Level Crossing System & Automated Spot Lights at Railroad Junctions’.

This program helps to pool the ideas from the youth to interact with Indian Industries and showcase their innovation at International level. There were 110 innovations that came from all around India from class 5th to 12th. The selected teams have to present their innovation at International Science Engineering Fair (ISEF) where students from all over the World compete for over USD 4 million in awards and scholarships.
