A training workshop on Advanced Optimization, Deep Learning Applications (AODA) was organized by Amrita Center for Excellence in Computational Engineering and Networking at Coimbatore campus from January 30 – February 2, 2014.
The four day workshop aimed to achieve the ultimate goal Artificial Intelligence. Delegates from industry and the academia discussed the development and implementation of various optimization and deep learning techniques.
Dr. Bharath Jayaraman, Dean of PG Programs, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, stated the importance of deep minds and appreciated the timely act of the Amrita CEN to conduct such a beneficial workshop in this field. He compared the old and present days of computer era. “It is very important to learn and understand the fundamentals deeply, as we have entered in to the Big Data era,” he pointed out.
Krishna Shastri, Joint Director, Corporate & Industry Relations, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, in his presidential address, spoke about the importance of machine learning and its developments. “Field of Machine learning is the fastest growing segments of technology. Developments in this area resulted in Automatic Translators, Computer Vision, Intelligent Search -Engine, Medical Diagnosis and Stock- market Analysis,” he noted.
The workshop attracted participation from 36 participants from professional colleges and industry in South India.
The workshop included tutorial sessions on the topics, Basic Linear Algebra, Modern Optimization Methods and Deep Learning. Tutorial and practical sessions were handled by Amrita CEN professors Dr. K. P. Soman K. P., Dr. Anand Kumar M., Vijay Krishnan and Sowmya V.
“Deep Learning is one of the top ten revolutionizing technologies with applications in natural language processing and computer vision. These courses aimed to impart deep learning knowledge to the participants and covered the latest research findings and implementation aspect of algorithms. We are so happy that more students and researchers having good interests on this topic and they will hold the flag in future,” shared the coordinators of the workshop.
Marking success of the workshop, participants shared their excellent feedback.
“I felt very lucky to be able to learn so many new things. Tutorial sessions were very informative and helpful,” commented Amrita Alumni, Unnikrishnan who is presently research scholar at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut.
“It was a good experience to be a part of such an advanced technical workshop. Connecting theory and practical in a track by skilled teachers were very helpful,” shared Thara Sasi, Project Engineer, Amrita Center for Cyber Security and Systems, Amritapuri.
