Over 400 oncologists participated in Oncocon 2009, the biennial national conference of the Indian Society of Medical and Pediatric Oncology and the Indian Society of Oncology. This is regarded as most important oncology-related event in India. Amrita Cancer Institute participated in a big way — there were 3 oral presentations and 7 poster presentations from departments of Surgical, Medical and Radiation Oncology and Head and Neck Institute.
Two prestigious awards were won by our doctors. Dr Amrita Suresh from Head and Neck Institute won the best paper presentation award for her paper — Identification and Validation of Diagnostic / Prognostic Markers for Tongue Cancer. Dr Surij Salih, also from the Head and Neck institute won the best poster presentation award for his poster titled — TFL Flap in Orbitomaxillary Reconstruction. We congratulate the Amrita team on this achievement.
All over the world, tremendous progress is being made in the understanding of cancer and how to manage the disease. The new Amrita Center for Nanotechnology on the health care campus, for instance, has developed ways to target cancerous cells at nano-levels. Frontiers in Oncology — this was the theme of Oncocon 2009. Over 20 internationally renowned experts of various cancers from North America, Europe and Asia also participated. The conference was hosted this year by Apollo Hospitals in Chennai.
