Amrita’s paper Real-Time Wireless Sensor Network for Landslide Detection was awarded a top paper award in the recently concluded conference SENSORCOMM 2009 held in Athens, Greece. This Third International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications was co-sponsored by IARIA (International Academy, Research and Industry Association), specifically its Workgroup on Sensors and the IEEE Computer Society, Greece Chapter.
The author of the paper, Dr. Maneesha Ramesh, was in Athens to present. “We have also been invited to submit the extended papers for publication in an IARIA journal,” she stated. This honor comes close on the heels of the successful completion of the first phase the Indo-European WINSOC project (see news) that resulted in several paper publications and presentations including this one. The project resulted in the first-ever deployment of a landslide detection system in Munnar in Northern Kerala, the architecture of which is depicted below.

Paper Abstract
Wireless sensor networks are one of the emerging areas which have equipped scientists with the capability of developing real-time monitoring systems. This paper discusses the development of a wireless sensor network(WSN) to detect landslides, which includes the design, development and implementation of a WSN for real time monitoring, the development of the algorithms needed that will enable efficient data collection and data aggregation, and the network requirements of the deployed landslide detection system. The actual deployment of the testbed is in the Idukki district of the Southern state of Kerala, India, a region known for its heavy rainfall, steep slopes, and frequent landslides.
